Data Exchange Capabilities of iOS GameKit in Facilitating Delay-Tolerant Networking

Xu Liu, Yuanzhu Chen · 2012

The past decade has seen a rapid increase in the number of smart phone subscribers world wide. Smart phones are no longer limited to voice communication and short messages, but have become a mobile, ubiquitous computing platform. In particular, many users would use mobile phones for social networking, effectively extending the scope of such an interaction technology. Therefore, mobile social networking is becoming an important venue for technological innovation and economic growth. The scope of mobile social network can be even further extended if we incorporate the new, groundbreaking networking technique, Delay-Tolerant Networking (DTN). DTN is made possible on off-the-shelf mobile computing platforms, e.g. the Apple iOS devices, via standard APIs. In this work, we evaluate the data transportation capabilities on the iOS devices using the GameKit Framework. It will be part of our project on a campuswide infrastructureless mobile social networking application.
