Towards the Security of Routing in Ad Hoc Networks

N. Uushona, W.T. Penzhorn · 2005

This paper discusses the security of routing in ad hoc networks. Possible security threats to the ad hoc network routing protocols as well as the security requirements to counter these threats are presented. Thereafter, various proposed secure routing protocols are discussed. I. INTRODUCTION An ad hoc network is an autonomous system of mobile hosts and routers connected by wireless links. The hosts and routers in an ad hoc network are free to move randomly and organize themselves arbitrarily causing the network's topology to change rapidly and unpredictably. Unlike traditional mobile wireless networks, ad hoc networks do not rely on any fixed infrastructure or any centralized administration (1). Ad hoc networks are of interest because they do not require any prior investment in fixed infrastructure. Instead, the network nodes agree to relay each other's packets toward their ultimate destinations, and the nodes automatically form their own cooperative infrastructure.
