Since the release of the V. 32 bis modem rec-ommendation. CCITT Study Group XVII has been working towards a new international stan-dard for high speed voice-band modems. called V. Fast. This standard is targeted to be finalized by the end of 1993. The goal of the V. Fast work is to increase the transmission rate closer to the channel capacity and to provide robust performance under the diverse operating condi-tions encountered over global telecommunication networks. Recently there have been many significant contributions for' V. Fast. They include proposals for adaptive use of the channel band?width. multi-dimensional trellis coded modulation. new signal mapping. shaping. and advanced equalization. This paper discusses the key fea-tures of these advanced techniques which are being considered for the V. Fast Recommendation.
