The Ballast Compaction Monitor

FI Mau, B Heij · 1987

Railway tamping machines require skilled operation to provide uniformly supported track. The average operator tends to operate tamping machines in such a way that similar compacting effort is applied to every sleeper. The good operator recognises from the way his machine is working where extra tamping is required to provide consistently supported track. The Ballast Compaction Monitor which can be added to existing tamping machines is being developed to provide simple instrumentation to assist the average operator to produce better track. The paper describes the design and development of the instrument.
