This chapter presents an overview of current research in the analysis of text - based chat. It provides background of commonly used natural language processing (NLP) techniques along with some statistical techniques that could be employed to help in the tasks of thread extraction and topic detection in text - based chat. The chapter interested in information retrieval (IR) for text - based chat. These topics are preliminary to being able to build general information retrieval systems for these media.
