Reducing energy consumption has recently been a hot focus on wireless sensor network researches. One common approach is to make use of a logical structure, such as a grid, to apply an efficient routing method in terms of shortening the routing paths. Nevertheless, we found that there are some possibilities to improve this approach. Based on the honeycomb cell structure, this paper proposes a novel data aggregation method for range query in wireless sensor networks. Due to the intrinsic characteristics, honeycomb structure enables shorter the data transmission path length and reduces the in-transit packet collision than the traditional rectangular grid. By suggesting an aggregation tree, we show that the events can be effectively overseen in the data aggregation scenario, even if the network consumes less energy and has longer life time.
