Communications Support for Power Provision in Developing Areas

Edith A. Jones · 1991

Lack of the provision of communications services is contrary to human expectations and natural development under any circumstances. As most developing areas are remote, at least in Australia, in the absence of the Public communications carrier, a satellite derived link is the only feasible solution, be it provided by entrepreneurs, the Authority itself or competitive communications carriers. Satellite based facilities can also now provide reliable and good quality mobile communications as a substitute for HF mobile radio. HF radio must continue to be the basic communications medium for back-up of the satellite derived services indefinitely in both fixed and mobile areas. The sharing of a toll quality switched service between several site services is discussed and the limitations identified.
