A system has been developed for investigating the implementation of adaptive signal processing algorithms on a microprogrammed bit slice system. The system developed has many features to enhance the simultaneous debugging of hardware and microprogrammes. A PDP11/45 with a standard operating system is used as the host computer on which microprogrammes are created. The PDP11/45 is also used to transfer programme and data to and from the microprogrammed system under development. Finally, control of microprogramme execution can be effected from the host computer. The paper will introduce the concept of a microprogrammed system. A number of algorithms for adaptive equalization of digital data transmission channels have been implemented using the development system. Aspects of these implementations will be discussed in the paper.
