NoSQL technologies such as HBase, Cassandra, MongoDB are becoming popular due to their ability to scale and handle large volumes of data as opposed to a traditional Relational Database Management System (RDBMS). However they lack two major functionalities provided by traditional RDBMS namely transactional and SQL interface. Transactions are designed to maintain database integrity in a known, consistent state, by ensuring that interdependent operations on the system complete successfully or all the operations are canceled. This paper describes a non-intrusive approach to provide transaction support for HBase based on optimistic concurrency model.
