A Convolutional Model of the Diagnostic Measurement Process
Timothy L. J. Ferris · 1994
Diagnostic measurement, in both medicine and engineering services, involves performing measurements with a view to identifying the condition of, and the inputs to, the system measured. The output observed is used to infer the system input. Many systems are complex, involving multiple inputs and outputs. Systems created in engineering may have considerable complexity, but normally have known characteristics, making solution of signal and system identification problems possible. Biological systems frequently have extreme complexity, and characteristics which are not or cannot be found. The problem presented by diagnostic measurement is modelled as a convolutional process in multiple dimensions. This model is discussed from several points of view.
