Deep Electrical Soundings in the Cheju Island

Kiehwa Lee, Hyoungsoo Kim · Journal of the geological society of Korea · 1993

Six deep Schlumberger electrical soundings with maximum current electrode spacings 1.5 km to 3.4 km were made in the Cheju Island to obtain hydrogeological information of the island. Deep soundings confined survey areas to rather wide and flat locations in the island, at two locations each in eastern and western parts and one location each in northern and southern parts. The field data are interpreted in terms of horizontal layer model. Interpretations of the sounding curves yield valuable informations on the hydrogeology of the Cheju Island. The distribution of ground waters of the island generally follows the Ghyben-Herzberg’s relation, which states that the fresh water overlies the denser saline water, with considerable local deviations. There is no geoelectric evidence for the theory of the impermeable basement of the Cheju Island.
