Many transform based video compression standards consist of discrete cosine transform (DCT), ME/MC and entropy coding. Motion estimation(ME), however, is the most computationally demanding component among many modules and about 60~80% of the total computation time is consumed in this. Complexity can be reduced when ME/MC is performed in the frequency domain after quantization and inverse quantization.
