As a graduation assignment for the study Informatics at the University of Technology Delft, research has been done in traffic information systems at BGC (Bureau Goudappel Coffeng). The research was focused on the distribution'; the estimation of an Origin-Destination matrix (OD-matrix). In the seventies BGC developed the computer model FASCAL, for the estimation of an OD-matrix. This model was improved in the eighties and now a new version has been implemented. FASCAL is an aid for estimating OD-matrices, it is a decision support system. It does not give a direct solution, but it helps the user find one. An estimate of the reliability of each suggestion made by the program is provided. FASCAL is based on the gravity model. The mathematical model and its user friendliness has been improved. Different distribution functions can be distinguished for trips between different area types, and for different travel modes. Traffic counts and parts of the matrix can be used in the estimation. FASCAL has been integrated in TRANPLAN (traffic program, Urban Analysis Group). In TRANPLAN different models for the estimation of OD-matrices are available. With FASCAL as a part of TRANPLAN, you have a powerful tool for estimating matrices. (Author/TRRL)
