With the rapid development of computer and Internet technologies, data storage or transmission becomes much easier.Recently, data protection has attracted much attention with an increase of the security concern.Since double random phase encoding was proposed, optical cryptography technique has been widely investigated. In this paper, we propose to apply a three-dimensional (3D) space-based strategy and phase-shifting digital holography for optical image encryption. The two-dimensional (2D) plaintext is first converted into a 3D distribution, and diffraction of the particles forms the object wave in four-step phase-shifting digital holography.Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. In addition, security of the proposed optical image encryption method and the performance against the attacks are also analyzed. Some encryption results are shown in Fig. 1.It can be seen in Fig. 1 that the plaintext is fully hidden after the encryption, and no information about the input image can be observed.
