QoS Analysis for Web Service Applications: a Survey of Performance-oriented Approaches from an Architectural Viewpoint

Moreno Marzolla, Raffaela Mirandola · 2010

Abstract Building applicationsfrom independently developedservices is one of the current trends in software devel-opment. In this context, the quality–and specifically performance–of a composition of services is a crucialfactorfordecidingwhichcomponentsmustbeselected, ortochoosewhetheragivensequenceofinteractionscan provide the requested quality of service. To achieve this goal, different methods and tools to captureand analyze the performance of web services have been developed. These methods and tools aim at helpingWeb service providers and consumers to understand design trade-offs, optimize the system by identifyingperformance bottlenecks, or analyze the system performance within a specified deployment environment. The goalof this paper to proposean initial taxonomyfor analyzing the existing performance predictionand analysis methodsfor the development of service-based systems. Then, we use this taxonomyto discussthe strengths and weaknesses of different performance prediction approaches, trying to establish a basis toselect an appropriate prediction method and to provide recommendations for future research activities.
