Growing traffic loadintoday's wireless networks bringsup new challenges withrespect to capacity. Simultaneously thedemands forhighquality voice services are rising. AMR half-rate in8-PSKmodulation combines both aspects andprovides doubling theGERAN capacity just ata slight degradation oftheperceived speech quality. A detailed performance studyof8-PSKmodulated AMR half-rate codec modesispresented basedonnetwork planning studies and profound system level simulations. Inaddition aperformance comparison toGMSK modulated AMR half-rate andfull-rate codecmodeshasbeenprovided. Thisanalysis isfocused on speech quality, coverage andcapacity byAMR-NBinGERAN networks applying different frequency re-use patterns ranging fromrelaxed 4x3totight lxl. Thetrade-off between quality andcapacity hasbeendemonstrated aswellasthegain provided by 8-PSKmodulated AMR half-rate. Network configurations offering full-rate quality bytheallocation of half-rate channels havebeenidentified. Thecapacity gaincan beusedtoserve additional subscribers and/or toincrease the quality andcapacity ofGPRS/EDGEdataservices.
