Thispaperbegins withtheoptimisation of threetestfunctions using a genetic algorithm and describes a statistical analysis ontheeffects ofthe choiceof crossover technique, parentselection strategy andmutation. Thepaperthenexamines the useofagenetic algorithm tooptimize thefunctional formofapolynomial fit toexperimental data; theaim beingtolocate theglobal optimumofthedata. Genetic programming hasalready beenusedtolocate thefunctional formofagoodfit tosets ofdata, but genetic programming ismorecomplex thanagenetic algorithm. Thispaper compares thegenetic algorithm methodwitha particular genetic programming approach andshowsthatequally goodresults canbe achieved using this simpler technique.
