ADS Technology in the Telecommunications and IT Environment (Position Paper)
V. Tschammer · International Symposium on Autonomous Decentralized Systems · 1997
Future telecommunications and IT services are to be realised by the combination and co-operation of distributed components, such as agents, controllers, managers, and communication units. These components will be distributed across multiple technical and organisational domains and will have to contribute to different services in sequence or even in parallel. The number and characteristics of components will change dynamically as new components will be introduced, existing components will fail or be withdrawn for maintenance, and peak loads will impose stringent requirements on the availability and performance of components. The ADS technology has been designed for applications in large distributed systems which include many autonomous entities that have to co-operate for a common task. An ADS system is integrated from a set of components which can undergo constant changes due to failures. modifications, and addition or removal of components. These characteristics are the reason why there is an increasing interest to apply ADS technology to the telecommunications and IT environment in order to solve problems of scalability, online-expansion, online-maintenance, and fault tolerance, as well as to integrate the ADS standards with those of IT and telecommunications platforms, services, and applications.
