Datatransmitted inlarge scale densewireless sensor networks (WSN)isoften highly spatial correlated, and filtering outthespatial redundancy hasbeenproved tobe effective inenergy conserving. Atthesametime, according to theresults ofMinDong, different MAC mechanisms should beapplied todifferent SNRregimes. Butnoexisting MAC schemes design exploiting spatial correlation takethis into consideration. Thispaper tried toseamlessly adapt theMAC behavior between theabove twomediumaccess schemes in theprocess ofexploiting spatial correlation. Thedesign, implementation andperformance evaluation ofahybrid MAC protocol, called HS-Sift, ispresented inthis paper. HS-Sift divided theentire sensing region intothree sub-areas and applied different MAC mechanisms toeachpart. Underthe proposed scheme, sensor nodesaround thesensing region border sleep mostofthetime, sensor nodes neartheevent site arecarefully scheduled toachieve high channel utilization and sensor nodesliebetween competing fortheshared channel withdifferent transmitting probability andbackoff time. Extensive simulation hasbeendonetoverify theeffectiveness oftheproposed schemeintermsofenergyconsumption, transmission delay while ensuring amaximumreconstruction distortion requirement.
