This paperdescribes an incremental programming en- vironment (IPE) based oncompilation technology, butproviding facili- ties traditionally foundonly ininterpretive systems. IPEprovides a comfortable environment forasingle programmer working onasingle program. InIPEtheprogrammer hasauniform viewoftheprogram interms oftheprogramming language. Theprogram ismanipulated through a syntax-irected editor anditsexecution iscontrolled byadebugging facility, whichisintegrated withtheeditor. Othertools ofthetradi- tional tools cycle (translator, linker, loader) areapplied automatically andarenotvisible totheprogrammer. Theonlyinterface tothepro- grammer istheuserinterface oftheeditor.
