We propose an ML(Mu1ti-Layer) structure, which is a hierarchical data structure for N-dimensional data classified into layers. In the ML structure, a node structure is extended so that data can be stored not only in the leaves(termina1 nodes) but also in internal nodes by adding a layer management mechanism. The ML-structure has properties that the data in a layer having a small amount of data exist in a position near the root of the tree. Good retrieval performances are obtained both in the case of a spatial search for a specific layer's data and that for plural layers' data.
