Thepermanent presence ofunderwater cameras on cabled observatories, suchastheVictoria Experimental Network UndertheSea(VENUS)andEye-In-The-Sea (EITS) onMonterey Accelerated ResearchSystem(MARS),willgenerate precious datathatcanmoveforward theboundaries ofunderstanding the underwater world. However, sightings ofunderwater animal activities arerare, resulting intherecording ofmanyhoursof video withrelatively fewevents ofinterest. Towardsthis end,an Automated Visual EventDetection Systemisindevelopment at theMontereyBayAquariumResearch Institute (MBARI)to address theproblem ofanalyzing cabled observatory video. This paperdescribes theoverall design ofthedevelopment ofasystem toprocess videodataandenablescience userstoanalyze the results.
