wireless systems playanincreasingly important roleinIntelligent Transportation Systems(ITS). Thesesystems provide high-speed wireless links between many ITSsubsystems. Asthedemandforvoice, dataandvideo services onthesenetworks grows, theneedtoimprove coverage range, capacity, datarateandquality ofservice becomes veryimportant. SmartAntenna cangreatly enhance theperformance ofwireless systems. However, therearemanydifferent flavors ofsmart antennas. Itisimportant forITSdesigners tounderstand the different types ofsmartantennas andchoose theappropriate one fortheintended operating environment. Inthispaperwefirst takealookathowwireless technologies mightbeusedinITS. We thenintroduce thedifferent types ofsmartantennas. Finally we present performance results ofpractical state-of- the-art smartantenna systems. I. INTRODUCTION
