RateControl toReduceBioeffects inWireless Biomedical Sensor Networks
Hongliang Ren, Hongyan Meng · 2006
Duringthecourseofphysiological information monitoring by wireless biomedical sensornetworks, adverse biological effects willbecausedbywireless radiofrequency radiation, especially forlongterm, intensive andclose inspection. Thispaperisconcerned withbioeffect metric toevaluate the performance ofwireless biosensor networks intermsofhealth effect consideration, andaprice-based ratecontrol algorithm to reducethebioeffect. Thispaperfirst investigates thebioeffects caused byradiofrequency transmission ofsensor node, including thermaleffects andathermal effects. Thebioeffects modelis studied inbothnear-field andfar-field, inrelation toSpecific Absorption Rate(SAR). Themaincontribution ofthisworkis thata normalized bioeffect metric, equivalent Coefficient-of- Absorption-and-Bioeffects (CAB),isderived toevaluate and designthecommunication protocols forwireless biosensor networks. Afteridentifying thefactors thatcanreducethe adverse health effects inthecommunication system wepresent a bioeffect awareratecontrol algorithm forthesystem. IndexTerms-WBSN,Bioeffects, SAR,RateControl
