Theuseofthree-dimensional (3D)scanning systems has recently beengaining popularity inthebiomedicalfieldfor avariety ofapplications requiring theexternal shape features ofbiological objects. Thepotential exists toexpand theuseof3Dmodels even further, bycontinuing todevelop simpler, morecosteffective scanning systems. Inthis paper, asimple, lost cost, 3Dscanning system ispresented, whichemploys thelaser light-sectioning technique fordataacquisition. Elliptical Fourier Descriptors are used fordatasmoothing andplanar section reconstruction. Results ofa proofofconcept experiment fortheproposed system demonstrate thevalidity ofthechosen approach. Directions for future workarealso discussed.
