Thirdgeneration mobile communication system iswidely usednowadays. Oneofitsparameter standard, whichisQPSKmodulation hasbeenadopted byInternational Telecommunication Union(ITU) tobe usedinIMT-2000. However, duetoamplitude variations introduced inQPSK,arather robust andreliable data modulation technique, namelythe7c/4-shift Differential QPSKisproposed. Fordetection purposes, twotypes of detectors areevaluated fortheir performance inAWGN andRayleigh fading channels. A differential detection technique called multiple differential detection technique whichusesmaximum-likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE)ofthetransmitted phases iscompared with conventional differential detection whichusessymbol-by- symboldetection. By usingsomeoftheIMT-2000 standard parameters, thesimulation results showthat multiple differential detection schemeperforms much better thanconventional differential detection scheme.
