Detectability ofperiodic andsynchronously recurrenttransient signals ina noisyenvironment inwhichthenoisepower istime varying isinvestigated. Foratleast one noisemodel, itisshownthat thebasicnonlinearity of theoptimumdetector isa limiter. Performance ofthisoptimumdetector iscomparedwithanalog cross-correlation andclipper cross-correlation (CCC)detectors. Itis shownthattheCCC performs nearly optimally, especially atlow signal-to-noise ratios, andthatitsperformance issignificantly better thanthatoftheanalog crosscorrelator.
