Quantitative analysis ofthetime-domain response of vestigial sideband television hasnotbeenpossible through mathematical modeling, sincenoclosed formsolution for suchasystemisknowntoexist. Experimentation with physical systemsiscumbersomeandtimeconsuming and generally doesnotpermitaccurate evaluation oftheeffect ofindividual parameter variations. Thispaperdescribes modeling byanewcomputer program, whichdoespermit quantitative analysis ofthetime-domain response, ofa vestigial sideband television systemwithahighdegree of accuracy. Theprogramhasbeenusedtoanalyze theeffect, onsystemresponse, ofvariations intheamplitude andgroupdelay response ofvisual demodulators withenvelope orsynchronous detection, andoftransmitters withbaseband orRF group delayequalization. Theseanalyses haveprovided datahelpfulinestablishing standards forabroadcast visual demodulator. Theprogramalsohasbeenusedtoevaluate theeffect ofinserting, inthetransmission path,CATVhead-end equipment withdifferent amplitude andgroupdelay response. Theeffect ofripples intheamplitude orgroupdelay response hasalsobeenexamined andrelated tothesubjective perceptibility ofechoes.
