Collaborative environments allowgeographically distributed groups toworktogether togenerate new knowledge. These systems contain manytools tofacilitate collaboration, including workflow management systems (WfMS).WfMSallow multiple agents toworktowards achieving a commongoalbyenabling communication between them.Thispaper presents abrief overview of collaborative environments ingeneral, andthen discusses thedistinctive characteristics ofcurrent WfMS.We consider theutility ofusing techniques employed innextgeneration grid-based WJMSincollaborative systems that areavailable today. Specifically, theidea ofconstructing workflows byapplying artificial intelligence planning techniques toauser-specified goalisexplored.
