Development of a new and eficient sub-band coding Of digital images is reported. This includes 1) the design Of short kernel symmetric analysis/synthesis filter banks with perfect reconstruction capability; and 2) entropy coding of the sub-bands by using arithmetic coding in combination with DPCM coding Of the lowest band and PCM coding of the higher bands.
