Message from the Chairs of the Second International Workshop on Semantic Interoperability for Smart Spaces

Paolo Bellavista, Eila Ovaska · 2011

• to focus on practical problems related to the design, development, deployment, and utilization of semantic interoperability solutions in smart spaces, also by considering wide-scale deployment scenarios and industrial feasibility in terms of cost effectiveness and performance. This year, we received 11 paper submissions from several different European countries. After a rigorous review process made by the Technical Program Committee Members, six of these papers were accepted in the high-quality, promising, and interesting Technical Program of the workshop (acceptance rate = 54%). The papers will be presented in two sessions, the first one hosting also the keynote speech entitled “Programming Pervasive Spaces” by Prof. Sumi Helal, a well-recognized and prominent researcher in the area of smart environments who honoured us by accepting our keynote invitation. We hope that the workshop sessions will provide a good opportunity for attendees, especially students and young researchers, both to access a fresh state-of-the-art overview of some recent relevant approaches in the area of interoperable semantic-based smart environments and to interact with one another in an informative setting. We would like to express our gratitude to all Authors who submitted their recent research results to SISS 2011; their contribution is, of course, the primary source of motivation and energy for our workshop. In addition, we thank all the Members of the Technical Program Committee who offered their valuable time and expertise to provide high-quality reviews, indispensable for guaranteeing the high technical quality of the workshop, within a tight schedule. A final but very important thank goes to the SAINT’11 Organizers, who gave us the opportunity to organize this workshop and provided us with prompt and careful assistance anytime needed; we really hope that this edition could be only the first one of a long and successful series of SISS workshops within SAINT. We welcome you all to SISS 2011, and hope that you will enjoy the program of both the workshop and the SAINT conference, as well as your stay in Munich.
