There are at least two ways to view this whole business of computers and education. In the one scenario, education is the Little Red Schoolhouse in Silicon Gulch the last bastion of humanistic education, surrounded by the blinking lights, the incomprehensible jargon, the multiple machine forms, and the outrageous instructional claims of an inhuman and threatening they. To the battlements and repel the invading electronic horrors! They must never penetrate the classroom and gain control of students' minds! Well, that's one view. It's kin to the one that in the fourteenth century A.D. saw the addition algorithm (you know, the put down the . . . and carry the ... way of doing addition) as an attack on the correct way of doing addition by using an abacus. It's cousin to the view that admitting the hand-held calculator to the class-
