SECURING THE NETWORKED SOCIETY; A UNIVERSITY CASE STUDY APPROACH

Otanga Daniel, Gichoya David · 2014

Privacy and security of information is an essential requirement for organizations in the current networked environment. It is therefore upon the organizations to enhance their approaches to handling information in order to maintain authenticity, integrity and confidentiality of documents they create, send and receive within their network and beyond. The aim of this paper is to discuss shaping the networked Society with main emphasis on Privacy, Virology and Security issues on Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) network. A case study approach was used to understand the methods the university used to secure information on its network. This paper uses design theory for information to describe the security scenarios. The conceptual models for this paper incorporates knowledge from; Stallings’s cryptography and network security concept, conceptual encryption model by Adewumi and Haworth Security Scenarios in Analysis and Design concept on network security. The key findings are that the University has no specific security approach or systems for information being transmitted on their network; documents in soft copy are transferred from one office to the other using storage device; Computers are shared by two or more users; passwords and antivirus programs are the common security mechanisms used by staff on their documents; the spread of virus on computers on the network is rampant.
