GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE SYSTEM ANALYSIS FOR AUTOMATIC 3-D MEDICAL IMAGE

Gopal Sundaramoorthy, William Evan Higgins, John D. Hoford, Eric A. Hoffman · 1992

Image segmentation, the process of defining structures in images, remains a problem in three-dimensional (3-0) medical image analysis. Unfortunately, a user is generally forced to use time-consuming, error-prone manual methods, such as slice tracing and manual thresholding, to define structures of interest. Automatic imagesegmentation methods can ameliorate the difficulties of manual methods. This paper describes a graphical user interface (GUI) system for constructing automatic imagesegmentation processes for 3- D medical-imaging applications. The system provides a user-friendly environment for prototyping, testing and executing complex imageanalysis processes and can interact with 0 graphics-based 3- D medical image-analysis package. The interface links to a library of 1-D, 2-0, and 3-0 image-processing functions and can easily link to other functions created by the user. Demonstrations of the system are given for 3-0 left-ventricular chamber extmction and 3-0 upper-airway analysis.
