On the Transmission of Analog Sources over Channels with

Z. Reznic, Ram Zamir · 2002

We show that for every analog source with smooth density transmitted over an AWGN channel with unknown but high SNR, with one chan- nel use per source sample, a single system achieves R(D) M C for all SNR's. We also extend the results to non-Gaussian channel noise. The problem of joint source-channel coding for the broad- cast channel is to send a description of a source over a broad- cast channel, so as to simultaneously minimize the distortions D1 and D2 at the two receivers. This problem is still open even for degraded broadcast channels. Shannon's source-channel separation theorem was not ex- tended to broadcast channels. A separation-based encoder for this problem could be constructed by a successive- refinement source encoder followed by broadcast channel en- coder. This scheme, cannot achieve the ideal point (01, Dz) = (R-'(G), R-'(Cz)), and is usually suboptimal.
