ADAPTIVEROUTINGAND TRAFFICCONTROL INDAMAGED CIRCUITSWITCHEDNETWORKS

Leslie F. Gifford · 1987

Thispaperpresents a local traffic control, the failure detection algorithm, whichisdesigned to duplicate theperformance ofa no-calls-to-deadnodestraffic control on a damagedcircuit switched network. Results ofsimulations runon adiscrete eventsimulator showthat, underthe conditions tested, thelocal control givesbetter networkperformance than no-learning and approaches theperformance of a no-calls-todead-nodes algorithm which uses perfect knowledge ofdamagednetwork topology. Under conditions ofheavycongestion, thelocal traffic control worksbetter thanglobal adaptive routing. Animportant advantage ofthelocal algorithm is thatitissimplerand moreeconomical to implement thanalgorithms whichdependon global network knowledge.
