Extended Abstract: An Architecture for Covert Channel Control in RealTime Networks and MultiProcessors
Randy M. Browne · 1995
This paper discusses a system architecture .for controlling covert channels in multilevel realtime networks and multiprocessor systems. The concept is derived from a popular (non-secure) realtime architecture I refer to as a Foreground/Background .s,vstem. In this paper, I address the covert channel (confinement) problem in the realtime Foreground. Covert channel control within this qstern architecture rests on two properties: (1) a fairly nondisclosure property called elastic: separability, (2) 'irystolic , or phase-delayed timing of realtime system input-output with non-preemptive scheduling. The mrchitecture is thus called a '5ystolic, elastically .veparable @. E.S.) realtime network. S. E.S. networks satis& a security property called weak conjnement 'I. 'lbtal security {called strong corflnement'y can be achieved in any SE.S realtime network by niciking ximple timing adjustments at external interfaces.
