A direct sequencespread-spectrum system, employinga least-squares equalizer isshown to performnearlyas wellastheoptimal receiver undercertain conditions. The systempresented hererequires neither theknowledgeof thenoisestatistics andoftheimpulseresponseofthe channel, noratraining sequenceofknowndatabits. The reference fortheequalizer isprovided by thedecoding circuit withnegligible delay. Simulation results fortheprobability oferrorare close tothetheoretical results ofanoptimal receiver. To adaptto changesin noisestatistics and channel, a restriction on thememoryoftheequalizer isrequired, whichcausessomedegradation inperformance.
