Thispaperpresents anoverview oftheapplications of intelligent control techniques onlocal andhierarchical control of FACTSdevices. Thesecontrol techniques aresuperior tothe conventional linear/nonlinear control schemes inthesense that they areindependent ofanymathematical modelofthepowersystem to becontrolled. Inaddition, theydonotdepend ontheoperating conditions andtheconfiguration ofthesystem towhichtheFACTS device isconnected. A Static Compensator (STATCOM) isusedas theexample inorder tocompare theperformances oftheproposed intelligent controllers withthoseoftheir linear counterparts. Nevertheless, theideas putforth inthis paperareapplicable to other shunt orseries FACTSdevices aswell. Twodifferent control schemes areevaluated: afuzzy logic basedlocal controller anda neuro-fuzzy hierarchical controller fora STATCOM in a multimachine powersystem.
