M3.8 Approaches to Extending the Hough Transform.

Hani Muammar, Mark S. Nixon · 1989

Though the Hough transform is a robust technique, it is limited by slow speed and excessive memory requirements. This paper presents three novel techniques aimed at improving speed and reducing memory. Two approaches centre on the use of two-pass techniques to reduce dimensionality. One approach specifically aimed at circle extraction, offers little more than a polar transformation. In the second approach, for ellipses, centre coordinates and rotation are extracted in the first pass, and major and minor radii in the second. The final technique, presents an iterative search procedure based on combining intersecting points between an approximation ellipse and its target. Combination is by nonlinear least squares to evaluate a better approximation. Each of these techniques requires less than 5% of the execution time of the equivalent Hough transform.
