Onlyadecadeago,micro-controllers indedicated systems weremainly limited toserver solutions thatprovided a semi-automated control ofasystem. Asthe20thcentury rolled toan end,systems becameincreasingly complex; integrating different technologies. Atthesametime, microprocessors became moreandmorea commodity toolinstead ofa component in anexpensive machine. Inthis paper, wedescribe theimpact of microprocessor integration atseveral levels ofa novelhetero- geneous commercial display system, notonlylowering thecost ofproduction, butalsoexponentially increasing thefunctionality andfault tolerance ofthese systems.
