F5-Technical Session I:Wireless andWireline Converrence Evolving toWireless andWireline Convergence -AnOverview ofIMS

Benjamin Y. C. Tang · 2005

Originally specified by3GPPtosupport IPmultimedia services formobile users, IMS(IPMultimedia Subsystem) hasbecome thefoundation forfuture wireless andwireline convergence. IMSoffers service providers theopportunity tobuild anopenIPbasedservice infrastructure that willenable aneasy deployment ofnewrich, personalized multimedia communication services mixing telecom anddata services. IMSisaccess agnostic sothat acommonIMSbased service platform canbebuilt tosupport various access mechanisms such asDSL,cable, wireless (CDMA,UMTS)andWiFi/WiMax. Assuch, IMS promises acost-effective evolution pathtofuture wireless andwireline convergence that meetnextgeneration service demands andrequirements. This talk provides anoverview ofIMSfrommarket, technology andbusiness perspectives. Wefirst look at market drivers fornext-generation services supported byIMS.TheIMSfunctional architecture being developed instandards andsolution forawireless andwireline converged network arethen examined ata highlevel. Thetalk concludes withafewkeyfindings fromIMSbusiness cases that demonstrate the potential CapEx/OpEx savings andrevenue increase madebyIMSoverconventional point solutions. BIOGRAPHY
