Formal Theory of group actions and its applications
Maria Nowakowska · Philosophica · 1978
IntruductionThe idea underlying the construction of the theory is that composite actions can be represented as strings of elementary actions, and the latter cannot, in general, be performed in arbitrary order. This observation alone suffices to draw linguistic analogy : there must be a class. of sensible orders in which the actions can be performed, in the same way as there is a class of sensible orderings of letters under which they form words -as opposed to nonsensical strings, and also -a class of sensible orderings of words into sentences -as opposed to syntactically incorrect utterances. This analogy has numerous fruitful consequences, since it allows us to use the concepts of formal linguistics for the study of actions.
