Millimeter wavetransceiver front-end modules havebeenmadeforuseinhighdataratetelematics transceiver applications inthefrequency band63to64GHz.Themodules incorporate a highlyintegrated core-transceiver MMIC, fabricated usinga commercially available production GaAs pHEMT technology, forup-anddown-conversion, signal amplification and imagerejection functions. Packaging technologies areidentified torealise potential lowcostproduction ofthefront-ends. UndertheMillimetric Tansceivers for Transport Applications (MILTRANS)project, aconsortium of UK organisations, thishardwarehasbeenusedina system demonstrator basedonmodulation schemes compliant withthe IEEE802.11a standard andusing acustomantenna designed for vehicle-to-roadside and vehicle-to-vehicle communications. Front-end performance characteristics arereported together withinitial system performance foranetwork ofnodesoperated instatic andmobile configurations.
