QUEUEING ANALYSIS OF DCHF AND J3F TOKEN PROTOCOL WITH VARYING TURNAROUND TIMEt

Manikanden Balakrishnan, Eric E. Johnson · 2004

Wireless Networks are generally characterized by a medium shared among a group of users. This makes an uppropriate Media Access Control ('C) protocol essential for eflcient chanrtel utilization. Wireless MAC protocols show signijcant performance degradation. in some challenging networks (e.g., militag, HF radio) that are characterized by Iong link-layer turnaround times, and most of the recent research does not address this problem. This paper develops queueing and simulation models for wireless MAC protocols j?om two functional categories that are suitable for such networks: DCHF, a contention-based MC protocol and the contention-fiee HF Token Protocol. We explore their statistical per$ormance for varying linklayer turnaround times under varying Poisson loads. The results indicate the performance efsects of factors such as link turnaround time, network size, and traflc loading on wireless MAC protocols.
