Performance-Polymorphic Declarative Queries

Thomas Padron-McCarthy · 1998

Performance polymorphism, where a system can select between several given implementations of the same conceptual operation, has been used in real-time programming languages, such as Flex. The contingency plans used in the active database system HiPAC is a related, but more limited, mechanism. We have introduced performance polymorphism into a declarative database query language. We have shown the feasibility of the concept by implementing a general, performance-polymorphic query optimizer. We show how performance-polymorphic queries are specified and optimized in our system.
