JXTA Communication Layers

Thearrival oftheP2Pmodelhasopened manynew avenues forresearch within thefield ofdistributed computing. Thisismainly duetoimportant practical features (such as support forvolatility, highscalability). Several generic P2P libraries havebeenproposed forbuilding higher-level services. Inordertojudgetheappropriateness ofusing ageneric P2P library foragiven application type, anexperimental performance evaluation oftheprovided functionalities isunavoidable. Very few analyses ofthiskindhavebeenreported, asmostevaluations arelimited tocomplexity analyses andtosimulations. Such experimental analyses areimportant, especially whenusing P2P software inagrid computing context, whereapplications may haveprecise efficiency requirements. Inthis paper, we focus onJXTA,whichprovides generic building blocks andprotocols intended toserveasa basis forspecialized P2Pservices and applications. Weperform aperformance evaluation ofthethree communication layers (endpoint, pipeandsocket) overa Fast Ethernet local-area network, forrecent versions oftheJ2SEand C bindings ofJXTA.We provide adetailed analysis explaining thebehavior ofthese three layers andwegive hints showing how toefficiently usethem.
