Theproblemofdesigning simple andenergy effi- cient sensor nodesforawireless sensor network isconsidered inajoint source-channel coding perspective. An algorithm for designing distributed scalar quantizers optimized fororthogonal additive white Gaussian noise channels isproposed andevaluated. Itisdemonstrated thatcorrelation between sources canbeuseful inordertoreduce quantization distortion aswellasprotecting datawhenbeing transmitted overnon-ideal channels.
