The blackboard architecture, originally developed for the HEARSAY-I1 speech understanding system, is a problemsolving framework. Since then, it has been used to structwe a variety of artificial intelligence systems. This paper first describes the blackboard architecture's basic components and enumerates the basic assumptions underlying these components. Although the blackboard framework suggests natural exploitation of concurrency,~~ far very few attempts have been made to exploit this concurrency. The paper describes DISPROS - a distributed blackboard architecture as a general framework for the implementation of concurrent problem solving systems in multicomputer environment. The computational model of the architecJure provides fault-tolerance. We show that it can withstand all types of faults except network partitioning. The paper concludes with the summary of the distributed architecture's strengths and weaknesses.
