Communications overDeep SpaceNetworks
Harald Ernst · 2006
Thehazardous operative conditions experienced by deepspaceenvironments (very large latencies andfrequent link disconnections) maketheuseofTCP-based transmission schemes inefficient. Onthecontrary, theuseoferasure coding schemes and moreappropriate Automatic RepeatreQuest (ARQ)schemes, available withinthePacketLayerCoding-based and the Consultative CommitteeforSpaceDataSystems(CCSDS) protocol architectures respectively, assurebetter performance results. Inthis paper, theadoption oferasure codes within CCSDS protocol stack isconsidered anditseffectiveness isevaluated with respect toARQ-based transmission schemes available within the CCSDSFile Delivery Protocol.
